“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver,
but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.
Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes,
made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
2 Tim 2:20-21
In King Hezekiah‘s day, the temple building of the Lord was restored to service because the people did as the Lord had commanded – cleansed and purified what was in the temple so that the temple was ready to be of good use for God’s purposes (2 Chronicles 29:35, 18:29).
Under the New Covenant, Jesus saved us from every past, present and future sin – sealing us with the Holy Spirit and calling us “the temple of the Lord” (Colossians 2:13, Ephesians 1:13, 1 Corinthians 3:16). Therefore, because of Christ, we can be “always ready” for every good work that God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).
But like the physical temple building, we can allow the world’s way of thinking and acting to creep into our soul. Why? Because it’s easier to follow the patterns of this world (Rom 12:2).
May we ask the Lord daily what we need to cleanse and purify in our soul – then do the hard work of obeying what God reveals. Why? So that our temple is ready to be of good use fit for our Master’s hands.
