My pathway to receiving biblical counseling was a unique scenario [or at least I think so].  Normally, when I am working through sin, or simply life issues, I reach out to my discipler.  She is an amazing older lady that has been in my life for a while and mentors me in what Paul describes women to do in Titus chapter 2.  However, in this case, I was struggling through sin that required me to walk through daily living with my family.

You might ask why it matters that things involved my family. To answer that, you would need to understand that I am married, mother of one and stepmother of 4, and 6 out of 7 of us are members of the church.  My objective was not to expose the sins/transgressions of my family members.  We don’t always know where our adult children are in their sanctification or what they are working through with their counselors/disciples.  I did not want to hinder that.  Also, some of us lead ministries.  Although our actions may not be disqualifying, I did not want to disparage my family or cause anyone in the church to stumble.   

So, I went to the ACBC website to find a counselor and the closest one to me was Teresa Baker in Oceanside.  She is 85 miles away from me.  I knew I could not meet with her in person weekly so I asked if she would see me virtually.  She agreed.  Praise God she did!!!

Those 12 weeks were so rich with Godly truth.  Teresa helped me to bring the word of God to bear on my entire life.  She helped me to dig in the Word and see that there was a giant log in my eye.  

We walked through the gospel, the book of Ephesians, podcasts, articles, and worksheets that pointed me back to truth.  Meeting with her weekly helped me to develop a habit of going to God in prayer before I go to anyone else.  I saw some of the idols in my life and learned the necessity of killing them.  Teresa walked beside me the whole time, encouraging me to confess my sins.

To this day, even though the 12 weeks are over, I feel like I have a lifelong friend.  I also use the resources I was given to help other women in my house.  I have been so encouraged; I am beginning a pursuit of my own ACBC certification.  My marriage is so much more enjoyable, and together, my husband and I are learning how to love our children biblically.

I pray I can work in the kingdom in this way.  I am confident that being an ACBC counselor is to do the work of the gift of healing that Paul speaks about in 1 Corinthians 12.  It is a supernatural gift that assuredly builds up the church.  I am so glad Teresa Baker is gifted in this area.
